Thank you to Robyn (Norman – cherished grandfather, minesweeper and gardener extraordinaire), Heather (‘dad’ – loving outdoors and always there), Jan (John – husband and a man of deep compassion) and Delfina (Ken – beloved husband of forty years). You introduced us to some outstanding men celebrating the very best of masculinity.
John offered us a collage of men who filled his early years with much joy, revealing personal grief honouring those who had died too early in life.
Bev L entertained us with a Wilcox cartoon acknowledging a shared experience of young men making good choices, and a poem by Mary O’Donnell entitled “Men I once knew’
Prior to these pen portraits, Bev M was welcomed back, entertaining us with early adventures with her young friend, their encounter with ‘the witch’ and the questionable entertainment offered to passing golfers as the girls treated bunkers as jumping castles.
Rounding out our meeting Anne, reflected on a memorable period discovering deep friendships through her ‘pedal group’, Robyn, ‘Taking the plunge’ making friends for life through a local craft group, Max, ‘Train buffs’ reminiscing a road trip to the Seymour Historical Train Centre and Carmyl, ‘Ever onwards’ ‘sliding’ across her journey from times tables and slide rules to computers.
Finally, Merv, ‘A future me’ left us lingering in his garden where quirkiness and artist’s licence reign supreme with two (perhaps three) canine guardians.
We are looking forward to the Seniors’ Festival in October. The theme for our 500-word stories on Monday 19 October from 2 to 4pm in U3A Room 1 is ‘Shelter’, the topics – ‘How I Came Here’ or ‘My Castle’. More details can be found in the post above and on the current topic list. All welcome!
