The second big transition was when I got together with some friends, and we hatched a plan to travel overseas. I had always been a rather shy and quiet child but was starting to learn how to come out of my shell somewhat. We booked a 6-berth cabin on a ship called the Fairstar, stopping in South Africa and Holland enroute to the UK, where I planned to catch up with family I hadn’t seen in 15 years or more. By departure day, I was the only one still travelling and shared the cabin with five strangers. Those strangers became friends. It was the start of a 3-year working holiday in the UK where I experienced quite a variety of things, good and bad. By now I had gone from shy and quiet to confident and adventurous. My disasters have been the topic of previous submissions, as has my move from working in shops and stables to having the confidence to take up a career. Something I never thought I was capable of.
I took up a career in the Air Force after returning to Australia and soon made friends. Our group became the ‘Gluttons Club’. We would go into town each pay fortnight and eat big at one of the many pubs, clubs or restaurants. Although Air Force food was OK, it was good to go out for some luxury too. I recall one trip to a place called “Dirty Dicks Theatre Restaurant”. It was one of those places where you eat and see a show based on Elizabethan London, with buxom serving wenches and bawdy ballads. They had a chain of clubs all over Australia and the UK at a time when theatre restaurants were popular. I met a fella I rather fancied. He was eyeing off my roommate, and his roommate was eyeing off me. Basically, we all had ideas of who we would like to go out with, and all ended up with someone different. It worked out well in the end. I met my husband Paul and we began dating.
Paul was often rostered on as guard commander whilst I was in charge of security. We shared a long wooden hut and supported each other as colleagues. My big boss was a bit of a romantic and kept encouraging us to get to know each other better. After a year together I got transferred to W.A. Paul remained in QLD. We kept in touch and were devoted to each other. After Paul got a career opportunity outside the Airforce with a W.A. based company, we became engaged and began our lives as a couple. 47 years and many moves later we are still together and happy.
