July - 'the benefits and joys of this fascinating game are immeasurable'

26/7/2026

Mahjong numbers have remained stable during the winter period.

During Kay’s absence, our happy group was capably led by Jane Rushworth.

I am certain the other mahjong players would agree with me that the benefits and joys of this fascinating game are immeasurable - great camaraderie among the players, noticeable mental stimulation and awareness and, as an added bonus, the gentle sounds of the ukuleles practicing in a nearby room.

"What a great group of people play Mahjong"

What a great group of people play Mahjong.

Players have certainly made great progress and continue to enjoy themselves. At some stage we might get to play all the winds, but no one seems to be in a hurry!

My thanks to Jane Rushworth for standing in for me so very well.

May - 'Our new trolley makes life a lot easier... and tidier!'

Mahjong has continued to attract new members. Most players are achieving the right Mahjong not the false Mahjong. It's great to see players attempting the fancy hands too.

My thanks to everyone for setting up and packing up which is really appreciated.

My thanks also to U3A for the purchase of the new trolley which makes life a lot easier and definitely much tidier.

The photos in the slideshow are just some of our Mahjong winners.

April - 'The present focus is on achieving Mahjong with three doubles'

20/4/2026

Our Mahjong players are coming along at pace. The present focus is on achieving Mahjong with three doubles. If this is not achieved it's a "False"

Mahjong, which attracts a penalty when scoring the game. Even though not all players are available every week we still had six tables this morning. Congratulations to our players who are going so well.
Our photos show some of our winners. If you check out the boards you might be able to check out the winning hands. We are grateful to U3A for purchasing the boards made by the Benalla Woodworkers.

Congratulations to our players who are continuing to learn new skills with Mahjong. I am very impressed with everyone's progress.

As a Convenor I am very grateful to the members who have shared their equipment.

Thanks also to U3A for the extra sets. Hopefully the new boards will soon be ready.

My thanks also to Jane Rushworth for stepping in while I had a few days away.

Mahjong has continued this year with several new players. The new players are progressing well.

Our 2025 players are certainly playing quickly and it's delightful to see the fancy hands being played.

I am most appreciative of how everyone sets up and packs  up. There is still more learning ahead for all players.

We are continuing to have our extended play every second Monday of the month when we do have a break for lunch.

New players are always welcome

'Achieving a Mahjong that can be scored has been a new challenge '

24/11/2025

My thanks to all the Mahjong players who have come along this year.

The year has been most enjoyable. I have been amazed at how quickly everyone has learnt the East wind round and also the progress with the fancy hands. Achieving a Mahjong that can be scored has been a new challenge.

For those who are continuing next year the development of the other winds will be interesting for those who want to follow that option.

I will be quite happy to teach new players whilst being on hand to answer any queries from the more advanced players.

Thank you too for all the help setting up and packing away and my replacement convenors.

Seasons Greetings to everyone.

"Such a wonderful group of players"

What a delight it is to facilitate the Mahjong group. Such a wonderful group of players. It is fantastic having such a dedicated group of talented people. It is great having both women and men in the group too.

We are enjoying our extended play on the second Monday in the month. There is always a good chat while we pause for some lunch.

At the group's suggestion we are planning to have a Christmas celebration on one of our Mondays too.

We are back to five tables again. I am always happy to welcome new and returning players.

"Mahjong players are certainly full steam ahead"

Mahjong players are certainly full steam ahead. Playing the fancy hands for the other winds has been most successful.

My thanks to Anne Goodley for taking the session while I had an appointment in Melbourne.

Our next day session is planned for the SECOND Monday in October.\

Finally my sincere thanks to such a wonderful group who unhesitatingly set up and pack up each week.

"Many players are 'playing the fancy hands in the other winds"

Mahjong has continued through Winter with a keen and talented group of players. Such is the level of enjoyment that a longer monthly session is planned for the first Monday of each month to continue playing, with a lunch break!

Many players are now advancing their skills into playing the fancy hands in the other winds.

I am very happy to teach new players too.

    Mahjong

Beginners welcome.  For those with Mahjong skills the next learning phase will include development with the fancy hands and learning how to score each hand.  Many members are keen to have an extended session to play a full round of Mahjong and this will probably be on a monthly basis.
